of Christian life – is reading the Bible, God’s Word. But, why? What is the importance of daily Bible reading?
First and foremost, reading the Bible introduces us to its Author. We learn about this great God who came to save us and we begin to understand His nature and His will. Not only do we learn about Him, but the believer also is drawn into an intimate relationship with Him through the reading of His Word. His Holy Spirit reveals His Word to us the more we read with simple hearts of faith, desiring to draw closer to Him. God promised if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. (Jam. 4:8). The highest goal of life for every believer is to grow in a deeper relationship with the Lord, and one way to achieve this is by reading His Word.
2.Having More Victory in Life
According to Psalm 119:11 and 1 John 2:14, one key element to the level of victory over sin and our flesh that we experience in this life is in direct proportion to the amount of God’s Word that “abides” in us, John says. This is one vital element of overcoming the devil and his lies. By hiding God’s Word in our hearts, the Psalmist says, it helps us not to sin or wander away from the truth. John attributes the degree of God’s Word remaining permanently in us with the level of victory and overcoming strength that we will enjoy.
3.Experiencing more blessings
According to Psalm 1, the person who daily reads and meditates on (ponders on or thinks on regularly by “chewing” on it) God’s Word will be planted securely like a tree by rivers of water. This person then is fruitful and prosperous or successful in all that he or she undertakes and is well grounded and stable. God’s Word brings greater levels of blessings in our lives, so who doesn’t want that?
4.Understanding God’s Will for Us
By reading God’s Word daily, and growing closer to Him in a deepening relationship with Him, we also become more keenly aware of what behavior pleases Him, honors Him, and reflects His true nature to others we encounter in daily life. In so doing, we learn how to properly live a godly and Christian life that truly brings Him honor in every area – whether at home, in the workplace, in church fellowships, or in casual leisure experiences with friends or family. God’s Word also helps us identify God’s direct will and leading in various areas of our lives, such as choices for when and who to marry, where to work a job, how to spend our money, and what kind of communications we should have. Directions for all of these and many more are found in the Scriptures, so we discover more of His will for us as we read His Word daily.
These are merely a few of the ever-increasing benefits of daily Bible reading, meditation, and study in God’s Word.
As this New Year is beginning, why don’t we all commit to growing in our faith by the daily discipline of ingesting God’s Word regularly. Just like our need for daily meals to nourish our physical bodies, so our spiritual body needs daily food and nourishment as well. This is found by habitual portions of God’s Word every single day.
